My Fall Home Reset: A Calm Checklist Before the Holidays

Before the holiday rush hits our house, I give it a gentle fall reset. Here's my room-by-room checklist, one small area at a time.

Every fall there's one afternoon when the light comes in low through our front window and I suddenly see everything. The dust on the sills. The fingerprints on the patio door. The hockey bags and soccer cleats piled in the entry like they pay rent. That's usually the day I know it's time for our fall reset.

With six kids, my husband and a cleaning business to run, I don't have a free weekend to scrub every corner, and I don't think you need one either. What I need is a few focused hours spread across a week so the next two months feel easier. Here's how I do it.

I start where the light comes in

Shorter days make every bit of sunshine count. I wipe down the window sills and tracks first, because summer leaves behind a surprising amount of dust and dead bugs. Then I clean the inside of the glass on the windows we actually look through, like the one over the kitchen sink, and run a damp microfiber cloth over the blinds. It takes a few minutes, and the whole room feels brighter right away.

I give the kitchen a fresh start

From Thanksgiving through New Year's, my kitchen basically never closes. A little attention now saves me later:

  • Clear out the fridge and wipe the shelves before the holiday groceries arrive
  • Degrease the range hood filter and the stovetop
  • Wipe cabinet fronts and handles, where little fingerprints quietly build up
  • Check the pantry for expired spices and baking supplies (I always find at least one jar of cinnamon older than one of my kids)

I refresh the places guests will see

When family comes to stay, I've learned they notice three spots: the entryway, the guest bathroom and the living room. So that's where my energy goes. I wash the guest towels and bedding ahead of time so they're folded and ready, dust the tops of picture frames and lamps, and vacuum under the couch cushions. You would not believe what lives under couch cushions in a house with six kids.

I get ready for winter boots

In Minnesota, the entryway is about to become the hardest-working room in the house. Before the first big snow, I wash or replace our door mats, set out the boot tray and give the entry floor a good deep clean. That way the salt and slush have less to cling to when the season really starts.

I swap the seasons

This is when the summer linens and light throws get packed away and the cozy blankets come out. While the closets are open, I set aside anything the kids have outgrown. Less stuff means less to dust and less to step around, and a busy season feels calmer when the house isn't overflowing.

A gentle rhythm, not a marathon

My best advice is to pick one area a day for a week instead of trying to do it all at once. Ten or twenty minutes after school drop-off, or while dinner is in the oven, adds up faster than you'd think. You'll actually enjoy the result instead of feeling worn out by it.

For our family, the fall reset is how we make room for what matters most in the coming months. I'd so much rather spend those evenings around the table with the people I love than chasing dust bunnies, and I'm grateful every year for the chance to slow down and do just that.

If you'd like to spend this season on your people, too, I'd be glad to help. Request a free quote or give me a call at 763-515-4433, and my team and I will take care of the reset for you.
